I’ve found myself over the past few months disturbed by the current state of yoga in western society. When I read articles or blogs that talk about “good” yogis and “bad” yogis, “flirty” yoga tops and pants and hook-ups between teachers and students, I worry that we are commercializing yoga to such an extent that we will lose touch with what yoga truly is.
And then I was reminded today in another article that quoted the Bhagavad Gita… “there are as many yogas as there are people.”
Wow.
That is the beauty of this practice. Each person has their own interpretation of what yoga is for them. They may practice in a hot room or not; have the latest peek-a-boo yoga top or not; know the Upanishads forwards and backwards or not; consider the eight limbs of yoga or not…and so on.
So, here’s what I say. Practice YOUR yoga. I often say this when I am teaching…this is YOUR practice, YOUR journey.
Namaste, Heather
